Rango...A Weird Western?
I had known about Gore Verbinski's Rango a few months ago. There was a teaser trailer with the main character running around the desert in a Hawaiian print shirt. With Johnny Depp doing the voice, and the way the first poster was designed, it looked a little like an animated version of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas with funny animals (which, now that I think about it, would have been pretty darn cool).
A bigger trailer was released today that showed more of the film, and now it looks like something else, an all out Weird Western; or at least a standard western with animated animals. With a name like "Rango" I should have suspected. Regardless, its a gorgeous looking film and I felt it was worth showcasing here. It really seems too get the Western look right.
...but, is it "Weird"? Now you can decide that for yourself! Rango opens March 4th.

I wouldn't classify this as a Weird Western Mark unless it has supernatural or science fiction elements. Comedy Westerns (even those featuring strange or scary animals) aren't "weird". Otherwise I'd have featured every animated cartoon set in the Old West in my book.:)
This film looks fun though. And if it does contain a supernatural sequence then we can call it a Weird Western. I kind of hope we can because I like this trailer.
I was wondering the same thing when I saw this yesterday. Perhaps it's merely weird from a base perspective. Being weird as "different" from a normal western and including the comedic elements.
Still, I'll probably see it.
I dunno', looked pretty weird to me ^_^
You could be right, Paul. Its really just a Western with animals the way that Home on the Range is a Western with animals. Sometimes I do tend to stretch the definition a bit ;)
Ash - It could also be that Ash, regardless I'm looking forward to seeing it too :D
Cory - It certainly does :D
There are a lot of weird things in Rango, and yes, that includes science fiction references (spot the Star Trek one if you can...) and supernatural elements. Can't say no more, but I figure you guys won't be disappointed...
It opens on March 4, BTW.
Interesting, thanks for the heads up, Anonymous!
My pleasure. FYI, Ain't It Cool News is this morning carrying a precis of Rango by someone who saw it at a screening in Phoenix. Let me say only that this is a VERY accurate reading of the film:
